We skipped the isopropyl alcohol wash and went straight to a quick acetone vapor bath for surface finish. That's a hack, not a standard practice, but it worked because we understood the material limits. Total time from file to part: 14 hours. The client had it in hand with 12 hours to spare.
I'm not saying 3D printing is always faster. For a simple, flat bracket, CNC wins every time. But for anything with undercuts, internal channels, or complex curves, the setup time wins the race for 3D printing. The bottleneck isn't the print speed—it's your decision speed.
Argument 2: Resin selection is not a 'nice to have'—it's the whole game
It's tempting to think you can just pick 'standard resin' and call it a day. But identical specs from different vendors can result in wildly different outcomes. The industry advice to 'always get three quotes' ignores the transaction cost of vendor evaluation and the value of established relationships.
But here's where Formlabs' ecosystem shines: they list every resin's properties—tensile strength, elongation, heat deflection temperature—openly. No hidden data. No 'call for details.' You need a material with 80+ MPa flexural modulus? They have it. You need ISO 10993 certification for medical use? They publish the certification. Transparency in material specs means I don't waste 30 minutes on a call asking basic questions. I can make a decision in 5 minutes.
That saved me in a separate rush order last quarter. A client sent an STL that was technically wrong—the wall thickness was 0.3mm, which our standard Tough 1500 resin couldn't handle without warping. But because I knew the material database, I switched to a flexible resin (Elastic 50A) that could handle the thin walls. The part worked. If I'd been using a vendor who hides their resin specs, I'd have discovered that failure after printing, costing us 12 hours and $800 in wasted material.
Argument 3: The hidden cost of 'budget' speed

But wait—what about quality consistency? Everyone says 3D printing has too much variance.
That's true for filament FDM printers. Beds warp, nozzles clog, and layer adhesion is a constant battle. But SLA (Stereolithography) and SLS (Selective Laser Sintering)—the technologies Formlabs builds—are inherently more repeatable. The machine is a closed-loop system: laser power, tank temperature, and resin composition are all monitored. I've printed the same part twice on a Form 4, three months apart, and the dimensions held within 0.1mm. That's good enough for functional jigs and fixtures.
So here's my bottom line: If you're managing rush orders and still looking at cheap FDM printers or quoting CNC shops with 5-day lead times, you're costing yourself time and money.
I'm not saying every shop needs a Form 4. For high-volume production (5,000+ parts), injection molding wins on cost per part. And for massive parts (larger than 30x30x30 cm), CNC is the only option. But for the category of 'I need it tomorrow, it's complex, and I can't wait a week'—a Formlabs 3D printer is not just an option. It's the fastest path to a finished part.
