If you're buying a 3D printer solely on the initial purchase price, you're probably going to lose money. The total cost of ownership (TCO) is what matters, and that's why I use Formlabs printers now.

I learned this the hard way. In my first year handling production orders (2017), I made the classic rookie mistake: I bought the cheapest SLA printer and the cheapest resin I could find. Looked great on paper. Saved my department $1,200 upfront.

Then the real costs hit.

The $1,200 'savings' evaporated after three months of failed prints, calibration time, and a $320 order of parts that warped because the cheap resin couldn't hold tolerances. That's the TCO of a bad decision.

Now, I manage our team's pre-production checklist. We use Formlabs Form 3+ and Form 4 printers. Not because they're the cheapest — they're not. But because when I calculate the full cost — machine uptime, material consistency, post-processing time, and rejection rate — they're the most cost-effective option I've found.

What TCO Actually Includes for 3D Printing

Here's the framework I now use before any printer purchase or resin selection:

  • Initial hardware cost — the price tag, including setup fees
  • Material cost per part — not per kilogram, but per successful print (factoring in failure rate)
  • Time cost — operator time for calibration, cleaning, post-processing, reprints
  • Risk cost — the cost of a single failed critical part, including delay penalties
  • Repeatability cost — can you trust the output across multiple orders?

The lowest quoted resin price often isn't the lowest total cost. Not by a long shot.

For example, a $40/kg resin with a 15% failure rate costs $47 per successful kilogram. A $80/kg resin with a 2% failure rate costs $81.60 per successful kilogram. The premium material costs more upfront but saves money in time, labor, and waste.

When Formlabs Makes Sense (And When It Doesn't)

I'm not a materials scientist, so I can't speak to every exotic resin formulation. What I can tell you from a production management perspective is this: Formlabs engineering resins (like Rigid 10K or Tough 2000) have consistently delivered within spec for our GD&T requirements. The print settings are validated. The support removal is predictable. The post-processing time is scriptable.

But it's not for everyone:

  • Formlabs is great for: Functional prototypes, production jigs, medical/dental models, parts requiring tight tolerances. If your part needs to work and needs to be repeatable, it's worth the premium.
  • Formlabs is less great for: Decorative models, low-fi prototyping where any material will do, or one-off display pieces. In those cases, the TCO calculation may favor a cheaper printer.
