Formlabs is a solid choice for professional 3D printing—if you understand its limits

  • Speed—they claim up to 40mm/hour on the Z-axis. In our tests, we got about 35mm/hour on default settings. Not bad, but (ugh) you still need to factor in post-processing time.

Here's the catch: the Form 4 still requires washing, curing, and support removal. It's not a “print and ship” machine. If you're looking for production-ready parts immediately, you'll need a $30,000+ SLS system or a service bureau.

Where Formlabs excels

For functional prototypes, tooling aids, dental models, and short-run medical devices—yes, absolutely. The consistency from print to print is what sold me. Where it doesn't

  • Choose Formlabs if: you need 10–200 parts per month, tight tolerances, and a biocompatible or engineering-grade material. Also if you value certainty over cheapest price.
  • Skip it if: your primary material is metal, your volumes are high (thousands), or you can't invest in washing/curing infrastructure. Also consider alternatives for CBN tooling, injection molding in Tucson, or laser-engraved wood parts.

The surprise for me: the Formlabs App and PreForm software are genuinely helpful. I never expected software to be a differentiator, but the automatic support generation and print monitoring saved our team hours per week.

Final honest take

Is Formlabs a good 3D printer brand? Yes—for its intended market. The Form 4 is a serious tool. But no machine is perfect. I've rejected Formlabs parts (maybe 5 out of 200) for minor layer shifting caused by user error, not the hardware. And I've turned to CNC for CBN materials, injection molding for Tucson-based bulk production, and laser cutting for birch plywood. Every method has its place.

If you go with Formlabs, invest in training your operators. That's the best advice I can give.
