So you're thinking about buying a Formlabs 3D printer… but which one?
Honestly, there's no universal answer. It totally depends on what you're printing, who's using it, and what your post-processing setup looks like. Over the past few years I've helped our company evaluate three different 3D printer purchases – and I've made some expensive mistakes along the way. Here's what I wish someone had told me upfront.

Scenario A: You need high-precision functional prototypes for engineering validation
If your team is printing parts that will be assembled, tested, or used as master patterns, accuracy and material properties matter more than speed or cost per part. Formlabs SLA printers (Form 2, Form 3, Form 4) excel here because they offer tight tolerances – typically ±0.2% of dimensions, which is competitive with much more expensive industrial machines.
What most people don't realize is that “high precision” doesn't automatically translate to “good part.” You also need to validate the resin's mechanical properties, curing time, and surface finish. The Formlabs library of over 30 engineering resins (including Rigid, Tough, and High Temp) is a real advantage here – but you have to check data sheets carefully. I assumed that “Tough 2000” and “Tough 1500” would behave similarly in our test fixture. Spoiler: they don't. That mistake cost us about $600 in scrapped parts and a week of rework.

Scenario B: You're a small design studio or startup prototyping quickly and cheaply
If your main concern is “how much do small 3D printers cost?” and you need something under $5,000 that works out of the box, a desktop SLA like the Form 2 (starting around $3,499 base, as of July 2025) looks attractive. But there's a hidden cost that many buyers overlook: post-processing.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: every SLA print requires washing and curing. If you don't have a dedicated workspace with ventilation, isopropyl alcohol, and UV lamps, you'll either spend extra for the Form Wash / Form Cure combo (another $1,000+) or deal with messy, inconsistent results. In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, we evaluated five departments and found that two of them had spent more on cleaning supplies and failed prints than on the printer itself over 12 months.
If you're budget-strapped, consider whether an SLS printer like the Formlabs Fuse 1 (around $7,499 base) might actually be cheaper in the long run for certain parts – no post-processing, no supports, just powder and a brush. But that's a different conversation.
Key check before buying: Calculate total cost of ownership (TCO) including wash/cure, ventilation, resin waste, and consumables. Use Formlabs' online TCO calculator or ask your rep for a breakdown.
Scenario C: You need medical, dental, or jewelry applications with strict certifications
This is where Formlabs really stands out – they have a dedicated medical resin line (e.g., BioMed Clear, Dental SG) that is ISO 10993 or USP Class VI certified. But certification doesn't magically make your workflow compliant. You still need to validate your own cleaning procedures, sterilization cycles, and traceability.
We almost bought a Form 3B for our dental clinic last year. I assumed that because the resin was “medical grade,” we could just start printing night guards. Wrong. When I asked the manufacturer for the Certificate of Conformance, they sent it – but it only covered the raw material. We ended up needing a full process validation that took 3 months. The printer sat in its box for two of those months.
If you're in jewelry or precision casting, the Form 4's 50-micron layer resolution and castable resins are excellent. But again, verify your burnout schedule. I've heard horror stories about crack patterns in investment casting because the resin wasn't fully burned out at the right temperature curve.
Key check before buying: Ask the dealer for a list of all required certifications per your intended application. Don't assume “biocompatible” means “ready for patient contact.”
How to figure out which scenario you're in
Here's a simple self-assessment I use with our teams:
- What's the primary use? Functional prototype (Scenario A) / Visual proof-of-concept (Scenario B) / Regulatory-compliant device (Scenario C)
- Who is the end user? Engineers who need tight tolerances (A) / Designers who iterate quickly (B) / Medical or dental professionals who require traceability (C)
- What's your post-processing capacity? Do you have a wash/cure station, ventilation, and trained staff? If no, lean toward SLS (Fuse 1) or outsource to a service like Formlabs' own Print Service.
The temptation is to pick the cheapest option and “figure it out later.” That's exactly what I did in 2020 – and it cost us $2,400 in scrapped prints and delayed projects. The 12-point checklist I created after that mistake has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework. Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction.
Bottom line: Formlabs is a good brand – but only if you match the printer to your specific workflow. Don't buy a Form 2 because it's “cheap enough.” Buy the printer that fits your scenario, verify every assumption with a sample print, and budget for the hidden costs. Your internal customers will thank you.
